Cypress Announces Interference Avoidance Technology for WirelessUSB Devices

Patent-Pending Technology Keeps WirelessUSB Range Robust in the Presence of Heavy Interference

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—March 8, 2004— Cypress Semiconductor's (NYSE:CY) WirelessUSB(TM) LS radio system on a chip performs reliably at 10 meters in the presence of heavy interference from multiple 2.4 GHz devices, according to recent interference immunity tests conducted by Cypress. The devices employ a unique approach announced today for handling 2.4 GHz wireless data packets that has been developed by Cypress to ensure reliable data communication in electrically "noisy" environments.

This patent-pending approach combines bi-directional Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) data transmission techniques, pre-defined pseudo-noise codes and dynamic channel switching to create a frequency-agile solution with excellent processing gain for guaranteed wireless data delivery. The technology is embedded in Cypress's complete line of WirelessUSB products, including its recently announced WirelessUSB LR line, which features an operating range of up to 50 meters or more in industrial settings.

Cypress's tests show that WirelessUSB LS is able to maintain its robust 10-meter range while in close proximity to three 802.11 networks and two Bluetooth devices continuously transferring files, two cordless phones in operation and an active microwave oven. The results of these tests are being presented this week by Cypress at the Wireless Systems Design Conference in San Diego, Calif.

"Immunity to interference is critically important for short-range wireless devices, including PC keyboards, mice and video game controllers, where dropped packets can mean lost data, causing frustration for PC users and video game enthusiasts," said Rich Kapusta, director of wireless marketing for Cypress's Personal Communications Division. "These tests further validate that WirelessUSB is the most robust, 2.4 GHz solution on the market -- and that can help manufacturers reduce support costs and incur fewer product returns."

More details about Cypress's interference avoidance technology can be found online at http://www.cypress.com/support/link.cfm?mr=immunity.

Featuring a highly integrated radio transceiver plus digital baseband, WirelessUSB LS is a single-chip solution that enables designers to significantly decrease development time, component count and system cost. WirelessUSB devices are also noted for their very low standby power consumption. They have a standby current of approximately 0.25-microamp with up to 0 dBm output power, which translates into long battery life for a typical keyboard, mouse or gamepad. In addition, WirelessUSB LS features a data transmission rate of up to 62.5 kbps with an average latency of below four milliseconds.
